Safe Smoking
Techniques
Smoking is never a good idea, for health
reasons as well as for safety, but until you find it possible to quit, protect
yourself and loved ones by following these precautions:
- For the health of other inhabitants as well as for fire
prevention, try to confine smoking to outdoors. Never smoke in bed.
- Never leave smoking materials unattended.
- If you feel drowsy while smoking, extinguish your
cigarette or cigar immediately!
- Use only large, sturdy ashtrays with a center weight so
that cigarettes fall into the ashtray rather than toppling over the edge and
onto the floor.
- Be careful as to how you dispose of butts, ashes, etc.
Never empty a live ashtray into a wastebasket containing paper and
other flammables. Instead, use an empty coffee can or at least a sheet of
aluminum foil and wait until cigarette butts are cold to the touch before
disposing. If in doubt, douse an ashtray with water before emptying.
- Purchase child-resistant lighters.
- Keep matches, lighters, etc., out of reach and eyesight
of children, preferably in a high, securely locked cabinet.
- Never smoke in homes where oxygen is in use (SEE SAFETY FACTS ABOUT HOME OXYGEN SYSTEMS).
