Safety Facts About Home Oxygen
It is not uncommon to see people using home
oxygen systems to aid with respiratory problems. However, some people smoke
while on oxygen, which can prove to be fatal, not only to them but to
the people around them. Be sure you and everyone in your home are aware of the
dangers of smoking when a home oxygen system is in use:
- Since home oxygen systems increase the amount of oxygen
in an area, fires can actually spread faster, as if flames are being fanned.
- Oxygen literally saturates everything in the
environment in which it is placed: clothing, fabric, hair, beards even
once thought flame retardant clothing. Everything burns faster
where oxygen levels are increased.
- Anyone who smokes should be willing to quit immediately
when placed on oxygen therapy. Lighting up while on oxygen can result in a
tragic, fiery death or extreme injury.
- There should be absolutely NO SMOKING ALLOWED inside a
home where oxygen is being used. Even when the oxygen therapy is not in use,
the environment remains oxygen enriched, which means a fire can spread easily
and quickly get out of hand.
